[F500] Any road racers use mufflers?

Boy, that's rotten. If someone had to protest you for that, I hope they won't be staying in this sport too long. I've never heard of the 24" rule, but I have to believe that it's from a time when sound wasn't a problem for racers. The rule doesn't affect me, but I'd maybe get your fellow racers together that may have the same problem and either appeal or get the rule changed to be more current. Happy neighbors are more important than a pipe sticking out the back. Of course, in road racing I could see how a pipe sticking out that far could be dangerous in the right collision. Maybe change the rule for solo.
I run a Novakar at Waterford (75 Db limit) with a Rotax, an Aaen pipe and silencer. I have not measured, but I know the end of the silencer couldn't extend past the rear axle more than a few inches. I'd be surprised if any older Red Devil or KBS had that problem either. I'm talking about the ones that would still be road racing. At all the other tracks around Michigan, we don't need silencers to make sound. I'm thinking you probably have an older car with a shorter wheelbase.

At the SCCA Solo 2 nationals we had two competitors disqualified
because their exhaust was more than 24" past the rear axle (they were
about 2 1/2" longer than the max). The reason they were long was because
they had mufflers, which the protest commitee reasoned was part of the
exhaust. Mufflers are not required, BTW. The cars involved have Rotax
motors with Aaen pipes and mufflers. They do not have a custom exhaust.
If you ever have to use a muffler at a track to make the sound limits is
the 24" rule superceeded, or are allowances made for the muffler?
Thanks
John Whitling
