Tamas -

Formula 500 is a class sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, which
is one of the major organizations that sanction road racing in the United
States.

The cars utilize 500cc snowmobile engines and the snowmobile derived
centrifugal clutch power transmission system (similar to the new Audi
continuously variable automatic transmission, however using rubber/kevlar
belts instead of steel belts). The cars with driver - have a minimum weight
of 800 pounds (roughly 365 kilos) when weighed at the end of a race. Race
distances in SCCA National Competition have a minimum distance of 45 miles.
(that is also the near maximum race distance since the cars have a 5 gallon
(US) fuel cell.) The cars use a rubber 'doughnut' that is 1 inch thick and
2 inches in diameter as the suspension 'medium'. The rubber doughnut can be
used in any manner that an engineer can conceive of using it. The rear axle
is required to be a solid axle. The cars have a maximum width of 55 inches
and a maximum wheelbase of 80 inches. The current engine of choice is the
Rotax 494 series rotary valve two stroke, water cooled engine that is fed by
2 Mikuni 38mm round slide carburetors, exhausting into a single expansion
chamber exhaust pipe. Unverified dyno figures report power to be in the
90/95 HP range.

The cars race at all race tracks that SCCA and it's member regions conduct
races upon. Some of the tracks that you may have heard of include Watkins
Glen (site of the USGP from 1961-1979), Daytona Beach (site of the 24hours
of Daytona endurance race), Sebring (site of the 12 Hours of Sebring
endurance race), Road America (host of CART an other organizations races),
Lagua Seca (host of CART and FIM motorcycle GP races), Road Atlanta (host of
the ALMS Petite Lemans endurance race). Additionally SCCA conducts races at
another 60 or so road courses that you probably have never heard of.

The cars are also used in a slow speed sport known as Autocrossing in the
U.S. This sport is a single car time trial around a course denoted by
rubber pylon cones.
