QRE Tests the 493 Rotax at Summit Point Regionals
Posted by: qreshadow on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - 05:52 AM
Road Racing QRE tested the new 493 Rotax at the double regionals at Summit Point last weekend. And, as was the case at Pocono earlier in the season, the 493 proved to have no performance advantage over the existing 494 Rotax. Although the QRE car did ultimately win both races, the fastest lap during the first race was turned by a 494. Margin of victory for the 493 in the first race was 4.08 seconds while the 493 car led all laps of the second race. Average lap speeds were 86.691 and 88.281 MPH respectively.

QRE has found that the same tuning setups used for the 494 worked well on the 493 thereby making the conversion extremely easy. Testing time and money spent by those thinking of switching to the 493 next year should therefore be relatively minor.

It should be noted that the minimum weight for the the 493 in regional racing is still at 800# and it continues to look like the 50# added by the CRB for 2005 National racing is uneeded and discriminatory. QRE will continue testing the 493 after the Runoffs and updates will be available after each test.

1st Test of the 493 Rotax in NEDiv.
Posted by: qreshadow on Monday, May 17, 2004 - 04:42 PM
Road Racing At the Double Regional at Pocono on 5/15,16/04, QRE ran the 493 Rotax engine. We did encounter some minor problems since we started quite rich and leaned down as the testing continued. Upon reaching the settings Rotax recommended, the engine peformed well. A little more carburetion fine tuning is required, but the "recommended stock" settings allowed the engine to "live" under track conditions.

The engine was not in any way superior to the 494s present and everyone was within 1/2 sec of each other. The driver's personal best time at the track in 2003 with a 494 was not threathened as he was off that mark by 2 seconds.

The test confirmed what Don Klar found out in 2003: the engines are as identical as can be. Testing will continue throughout 2004 with the results sent to Topeka and posted on the F500 email list.

Any New Mexico (or nearby) Road Racers?
Posted by: jfslenes on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 07:03 AM
Road Racing May 16, 2004 Southwest Motorsport Road Race Club holds an event at Sandia Motor Speedway's treacherous and technical 14 turn course covering 1.6 miles. All cars are welcome to this Sandia Spring Fling Muscle Mania. This event will feature who knows what kinds of muscle - GT 350, Cougar, Pantera, Tiger, Camero, Corvette. Again, all cars are welcome.

All SWMS events include a driver school with both classroom and on track training. Race groups include open wheel, vintage, and contemporary cars. We also allow non race prepped cars to lap at high speeds with very limited passing. SWMS is a "gentlemens" race club with paint trading frowned upon rather harshly. Safety to body and car and worker are paramount!

Club web site has all details and contact information. Know someone in NM? Please tell them about this event and the club. If you're within a days drive, take an early long weekend and visit Albuquerque for this fun day on track.
