Maintenance and Tuning Tricks to remove sticky rear hubs.

Rear hubs can be difficult to remove after "fusing" themselfs to the rear axle. Whether drive, brake, or wheel hubs, banging away with a hammer is no good. Instead try this little trick:

Rotax 494 Replacement Cylinder Sleeves
Posted by: qreshadow on Friday, January 07, 2005 - 04:41 PM
Maintenance and Tuning Although there may be only a few individuals who "sleeve" their damaged 494 cylinders instead of replacing the whole cylinder, it has been discovered recently that the ports in the sleeves currently available are being "machined in" instread of being "cast in" as the original(earlier) sleeves were.

Rotax's casting molds were old and prone to core shifting thereby placing the ports in a slightly different position then designed on occasion. Rotax therefore decided to abandon using the casting method and instead, machine the ports in the sleeves. This allows for better and consistant accuracy. It does not in any way change the design or position of the ports. Everything remains the same as originally designed, no performance value is present.

However, this could pose a problem in a teardown since it is quite evident that the ports have been machined. Tony Murphy has informed the SCCA Technical Department of the change and will provide the club with a "new" sleeve for their scrutiny if they so request. We await their decision.

This article, which I originally published on the old F500.org site many years ago, discusses the basic process and techniqes of setting up your clutches correctly.

Reed vs. Rotary Valve Engines Explained
Posted by: edc on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 - 06:35 PM
Maintenance and Tuning

An excellent article from Snowmobile News describing the three different intake control systems used on 2stroke: reed valve, roatry valve and piston port.

The Kawasakai and Chaparrel engiens are piston port. The Rotax 494 and 494-Rave are rotary valve, and the Rotax 493 and AMW are reed valve.
