F500 Rule Changes

It seems that the rule change proposals originally developed, discussed and incubated here on the F500 mailing list are making some headway. The following actions on some of these proposed rules appeared in the May 2006 FasTrack:

SUBMITTED TO BoD FOR APPROVAL
F500
Item 1. Effective 11/1/06: Add the following to section 17.1.6.E.15.g:
Rotax 494 and 493 engines: Any Rotax 494 or 493 respectively model thermostat housing or water outlet may be used. The water bypass may
be blocked.

NOT RECCOMENDED
Formula
2. F500 - Remove the weight penalty from the 493 (various - 5 letters). The weight is
appropriate as listed.
3. F500 - Allow Kawasaki engines unlimited porting (Wilson). We agree that the Kawasaki
engine requires assistance; however, porting is not consistent with F500 rules. See technical
bulletin #06-05 for weight reduction adjustment.

And Technical Bulletin #06-05 reduces minimum weight for Kawasaki Engines to 700 pounds:

F500
1. Section 17.1.6.E.2, change the first paragraph to read as follows: Minimum weight as qualified and raced, with driver, shall be 700 lbs (800
lbs for AMW and Rotax 494 engines, 850 lbs for Rotax 493 engines).

Other items are still under consideration and there will be more discussion and further input requested on several of them.

Pump Gas Proposal

Tired of paying $8 a gallon for 100+ octane race gas just to pass the fuel tests when our engines were designed to run on plain olf 89 octane pump gas? Well, there is hope...

CRB member Stan Clayton has informed us that we have a window of opportunity to get the current fuel rules changes to allow F500 to run the same pump gas standards and tests that Showroom Stock and IT cars do. That basically means plain old 89 octane pump gas.

Stan will support us on this effort IF we, the F500 community, send the CRB letters indicationmg that we want this rule change. Well... of course we want to run $2.50 gas instead of $8 gas!

If you support (or don't support) changing our fuel rules to allow pump gas, please write an email to the CRB NOW!!! You may email your comments on this proposal to the CRB at crb@scca.com. Do it now. It doesn't have to be elaborate. Just a line or two stating that you support or object to the proposal to allow pump gas in F500 is sufficient.

F500 Improvement Proposal Letter Writing Campaign

Thanks to the efforts of Joe Palmer, we have identified six F500 rule change proposals which have been sent to the Club Racing Board for consideration. Now is the time to voice your views on these proposals to the CRB!!!

The proposed rule changes are:

#2 - Allow the overbore of the Kawasaki to close to 500cc
#3 - Allow new intake manifolds & regular 38mm Mikuni VM carbs on the AMW engine
#4 - GCR should recommend electric start, but not require it
#5 - Allow Removal of Pull Starter
#6 - Allow Removal of Thermostat
#8 - Allow Longer Suspension Rubbers

The full details of these proposed rule changes as well as the voting results is available at http://mysite.verizon.net/jpalmer1/f5jump.htm.

PLEASE draft an email to the CRB at crb@scca.com indicating your support (or not) for these proposals. You may draft one single letter in reference to these six items. Be sure to reference the common item names and even item #'s for the CRB's ease of use. However, also be sure to explain your "status" and express your full opinion/stance on each item within your letter.

Reversed Engine & Transfer Case Outlawed

New rules wording in the March Fastrack effectively outlaws the RaKavoN reversed engine mounting and transfer case.

F500

1. Effective 3/1/06 approved by the BoD during their February meeting, add the following after the first paragraph of section 17.1.6.E.15:

The engine must be installed in the chassis so that the exhaust ports face to the front of the car. The engine may be inclined from vertical.

MARRS Series Proposed Restrictions

To all who are in the Northeast and run at Summit Point. The MARRS powers that be are proposing that all Regionals be restricted to closed wheel cars at Summit Point, due to the overall lack of attendance of Formula cars. They are not complaining about FV or F500 but feel that if they target FA, FC, FF and FM, it wouldn't be fair to let any Formula cars run.
See the thread on www.specmiata.com, then scroll down to recent posts and find the one that is titled "Re:MARRS alternative weekend schedule options".

F500 Rule Change Proposal - Engine Orientation and Transfer Cases

In the Febuary Fastrack, submitted to the Borad Of Directors for approval:

Item 1. Effective at a time to be determined by the BoD, add the following after the first paragraph of section 17.1.6.E.15:
Engines must be mounted forward, with the exhaust ports forward. Transfer cases are prohibited.

This is a little difficult to find since there was a mistake in publishing Fastrack and the Formula 500 heading was omitted from above this item, so it was quite easy to miss it if you just scan for Formula 500 item like I usually do.

The essence of this proposed rule change is to to prevent both reversing the engine, and the use of transfer cases. This is exactly what Jay Novak did in the Rakovon this year at The Rounoffs. This configuration was protested and subsequently approved in the tech shed there.

There has been a very "lively" discussion of the topic on the F500 mailing list the last few weeks which CRB member Stan Clayton has been kind enough to participate in. Based on that discussion, there is considerable controversy and disagreement about this proposal.

If you haven't been following that discussion, ou can read the archives of the mailing list here

This proposal currently sits with the Board of Directors pending approval. If you have an opinion on this proposal, send email to bod@scca.com and crb@scca.com with your comments.

Joining the existing media menu under motorsport publisher Rob Howden’s growing banner,
eFormulaCarNews.com will make its official debut on Thursday morning when the website’s editorial staff will lock and load in the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course media tower for the final day of qualifying for the SCCA Runoffs. The site has already been loaded with news and press releases from the most recent events and will proceed to develop through daily updates and original editorial. This coming weekend, the SCCA’s national championship shootout will be the site’s primary focus as EFCN brings a new level of online coverage to the pinnacle of grassroots road racing.

EFCN will focus solely on the open wheel junior formula categories, filling a void by beginning with the grassroots forms of the sport and peaking on the development ladder with the Champ Car Formula Atlantic Series and Infiniti Pro Series.

The site has been designed to provide formula car enthusiasts with an online home where they can get a full dose of news and information with every visit. Daily news postings, one-on-one interviews, immediate series information distribution and trackside coverage will be the key highlights of this new offering. EFCN will also feature a Driver Bio section, our Results reporting suite and an online forum to fuel useful and positive discussion on the sport.

Former F500 Drive Andy Lally To Run 24 Hours of LeMans

Andy Lally Joins Miracle Motorsports for Le Mans

Road racer Andy Lally will join Miracle Motorsports's driving lineup for the upcoming 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 18. He will join teammates John Macaluso and Ian James in the squad's Courage C65 AER turbo LMP2 car for the team's - and Lally's - first-ever trip to the 8.48-mile La Sarthe circuit.

"I'm thrilled," Lally said. "I had a chance to test the car at Road Atlanta as well as Sebring in the last month, and it is such a pleasure [to drive] and so fun."

Lally has been an ALMS and Grand-Am regular for many years, with a 2001 24 Hours of Daytona win in the SRPII class as his career highlight, alongside that class's overall title that same year.

"It's going to be a tough race," Lally said. "My class [LMP2] is the most competitive than it has ever been." There are 14 other LMP2 entries at Le Mans this year.

"We'll treat it like any other endurance race," he added. "There is a ton of preparation needed to be able to do this race right and there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work by the crew that is so important."

Miracle Motorsports won its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2004 and 2005. Lally, Macaluso and James will test at Le Mans this Sunday, June 5.

Additionally, the event dates move back one week and will be contested in late September.

"We're very happy to partner with Heartland Park to create nearly a month of SCCA Championship competition in 2006," SCCA Director of Solo Tasha Goodale said. "The new facility will provide ample room and amenities for the competitions and an improvement in the course surface. We're also able to move the events a week later without stepping on the Club Racing Runoffs., which will also be held at Heartland for the first time."

The 2006 events will begin the weekend of Sept. 23-24 with The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale. Following the traditional Monday off, the four-day The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships begin Tuesday, Sept. 26, concluding Friday, Sept. 29.

SCCA's version of autocross, Solo has not only been a part of the motorsports ladder system for many of today's top sports car racers, but also remains a competitive destination in itself, featuring some of the closest grassroots motorsports competitions in North America.

A RADICAL Day

For Immediate Release
What is a Radical Day excuse me Tackday ? To answer that question a half dozen other people and I attended the November 23rd Radical Trackday at Summit Point Race Track, WVA. Hosted by the FunKtion Auto Group, Great Falls Va., we blasted around the famed road course first as a passenger and then as driver. The two beautifully prepared Radical SR3’s didn’t miss a beat all day. You might be asking yourself about now ; can I handle a 200 HP racecar? Well the most overheard expression from those who stepped from behind the wheel was, “It’s a hoot and so easy to drive”. My Formula 500 has about 86HP. I had no problems with the Radical’s power. Drivers with no racing experience quickly adapted to the easy to drive Radicals. After a thorough “car introduction” by Walid Achi, FunKtion Auto Group founder, the group was treated to a low key, no stress experience of putting the pair SR3’s to the test. If you are into racing, or enjoy a high speed driving experience, or would like to treat your better-half to something a little more exciting then dinner and movie, then call FunKtion (703 981-6685) for their 2005 Trackday schedule…Yeaaaa Baby.
